Gabriela Hearst, a Fashion Designer with Creative Elegance

Tuesday, September 12th, 2017 at 2:53pm Engel & Völkers Vancouver

Gabriela grew up on a ranch in Uruguay but today she is a New York - based Fashion Designer who is married to Austin Hearst. Back in 2004 she launched her first brand Candela, with a sunny, laid back style complicit with her South American ranching roots.

Three years ago, she launched a brand under her own name Gabriela Hearst, that has a more luxe line, but still significantly far removed from the froth of Oscar de la Renta and the Upper East Side ladies. She refers to her line and work as an "layering work, it starts from the inside out, a lot of work with very thin knits and soft textures."

Brought up as part of a gaucho family in Uruguay in the 1980's where they had no tv or McDonalds, and despite of coming from a completely different background as her husband, they found a point of juncture as both of their families always love horses, sometimes even more than humans.

Gabriela and her husband Austin, gravitated to the West Village for their family home because they feel the area has the most beautiful streets in NYC with lots of trees just like in London. The couple wanted something that would feel little bit rustic, it has to be warm and not too precious, where they can connect, love and fight.

Their home display some vintage pieces of furniture, and where Gabriela mix up classic Hearst heirlooms with modern tastes, with wooden dining table and chairs,  large chandelier above a rich ornate occasional table. Everywhere you look, there are grand oil paintings, or remarkable family photos featuring royals and presidents and an impressive collection of Latin American contemporary art. Gabriela is a keen collector, with recent acquisitions include pieces by Argentine hyperrealist Diego Garvinese,  Julio Alpuy and Fernando Botero.

From stallions to art to fashion and literary treasures, this New York City branch of the Hearst dynasty is adding new layers of history to one of the most famous names in American history.
